LNG Terminal Operations

Field operators, control-room personnel and developing terminal operations professionals

Provide a structured technical pathway through LNG storage, BOG management, sendout, vaporization, controls and safeguarding so learners can understand how a receiving or regasification terminal functions as an integrated operating system.

Review cadence: At least annually and whenever material curriculum, assessment or scope requirements change. How curriculum governance works →

Learning outcomes

What the program is structured to develop.

  • Trace the LNG terminal process from storage through gas sendout.
  • Relate tanks, pumps, BOG systems, vaporizers and controls to one another.
  • Interpret major operating variables and recognize common protective responses.
  • Use PFDs, P&IDs and cause-and-effect information as part of system understanding.

Technical curriculum

18 connected technical subjects

LNG Fundamentals · Foundational

LNG Properties, Cryogenics and Phase Behavior

Build the physical foundation needed to understand why LNG equipment, materials, operating limits and safeguards are different from conventional ambient-temperature hydrocarbon systems.

Open topic

Engineering Drawings · Foundational

Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) for LNG Facilities

Learn to read an LNG process at system level by following major equipment, streams, operating conditions and material or energy flows on a PFD.

Open topic

Engineering Drawings · Intermediate

Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)

Develop the ability to read the detailed relationship among process piping, valves, instruments, equipment, control loops and safeguards on LNG P&IDs.

Open topic

Storage · Intermediate

LNG Storage Tanks and Tank Systems

Understand the major systems around LNG storage tanks, including containment, insulation, instrumentation, pressure management, pump columns and safeguards.

Open topic

Storage · Intermediate

LNG Tank Instrumentation and Inventory Measurement

Understand the level, temperature, pressure and density-related measurements used to monitor LNG tank inventory and thermal condition.

Open topic

Rotating Equipment · Intermediate

Cryogenic In-Tank Pumps

Study submerged LNG pumps, pump columns, motor arrangement, hydraulic behavior and the operating considerations that arise from cryogenic service.

Open topic

Process Systems · Intermediate

Boil-Off Gas Management

Understand the sources, collection, compression, recovery and disposition of BOG across storage, unloading, loading and regasification operations.

Open topic

Rotating Equipment · Intermediate

Boil-Off Gas (BOG) Compressors

Study the role of BOG compressors in controlling LNG tank and transfer-system vapor generation while maintaining a stable vapor-handling path.

Open topic

Regasification · Intermediate

LNG Recondenser Systems

Study how a recondenser uses subcooled LNG to absorb and condense BOG while supporting stable suction conditions for high-pressure sendout pumps.

Open topic

Rotating Equipment · Intermediate

LNG High-Pressure Sendout Pumps

Understand how high-pressure LNG pumps raise liquid pressure before vaporization and how their hydraulic operating envelope connects storage, recondenser and vaporizer systems.

Open topic

Regasification · Foundational

LNG Regasification Process

Follow LNG from storage through pumping, BOG recovery, vaporization, metering and pipeline sendout.

Open topic

Regasification · Intermediate

Open Rack Vaporizers (ORVs)

Understand how ORVs transfer heat from seawater to pressurized LNG, and how seawater flow, icing, materials and outlet temperature affect operation.

Open topic

Regasification · Intermediate

Submerged Combustion Vaporizers (SCVs)

Study the operating principle of SCVs, where combustion heats a water bath that transfers heat to LNG flowing through submerged coils.

Open topic

Controls & Protection · Intermediate

DCS, SIS and Emergency Shutdown Systems

Understand the different roles of the distributed control system, safety instrumented system and emergency shutdown functions in an LNG facility.

Open topic

Instrumentation & Control · Intermediate

Control Valves and Final Control Elements

Study how control valves convert controller output into process action and how sizing, trim, actuator behavior, positioners and process conditions affect controllability.

Open topic

Valves & Protection · Intermediate

Emergency Shutdown Valves (ESDVs)

Learn how ESDVs isolate inventories or process sections during defined shutdown scenarios and how valve fail position, actuator design and shutdown logic fit into the protective architecture.

Open topic

Safety Systems · Intermediate

Fire & Gas Detection Systems in LNG Facilities

Study the detection and response architecture used to identify flammable gas, fire or cryogenic release hazards and initiate alarms or protective actions.

Open topic

Process Systems · Advanced

LNG Facility Startup and Shutdown Philosophy

Understand the system dependencies, sequencing and stabilization concepts that shape startup, normal shutdown and emergency shutdown of LNG facilities.

Assessment framework

Assessment is defined by the active program.

  • Technical knowledge assessment
  • System-tracing or process-sequence exercises
  • Scenario-based operating questions where included
  • Workplace evidence only when defined in a scoped employer program

Possible evidence

Evidence examples for governed delivery.

  • System walkdown or familiarization record
  • Procedure-based task observation
  • Scenario or knowledge assessment
  • Employer qualification evidence when separately governed by the employer

Choose the delivery relationship

The same program can enter through different governed relationships.

Individual access, corporate deployment, institutional use and verified partner learning have different commercial, assessment and evidence requirements.
